Puppy Development:
From Birth to Eight Weeks Old

Birth:

Puppies are born blind and deaf and are entirely dependent on their mother for care. They spend most of their time sleeping and nursing while their mother provides warmth, nourishment, and assistance with elimination.

Neonatal Period:

During the first two weeks of life, puppies grow rapidly, doubling their birth weight within the first week. Their eyes and ear canals remain closed, so they rely on their sense of touch and smell to explore their environment. Mother's milk is essential for providing nutrients and antibodies to strengthen their immune system.

Transitional Period:

Between weeks 2 to 4, puppies' eyes begin to open, followed by their ear canals. They become more active, attempting to crawl and explore their surroundings. Baby teeth start to emerge, and social interaction with littermates and the mother becomes more pronounced.

Socialization Period:

From weeks 4 to 8, puppies become more mobile and coordinated, engaging in play and exploration. They start transitioning to solid food while weaning off their mother's milk. This stage is crucial for introducing puppies to various stimuli, people, and experiences to foster positive social development. Basic training, such as potty training and simple commands, can begin during this period. Puppies may also start teething, leading to chewing behaviors.

8 Weeks and Beyond:

By 8 weeks of age, puppies are ready to leave their mother and littermates to join their new homes. They should receive their first vaccinations and deworming treatments. Continued socialization and training are vital for their ongoing development and behavior. Owners play a significant role in providing a safe environment, proper nutrition, veterinary care, and plenty of love and attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Puppy Have Vaccinations and Deworming Before Coming Home?

Yes, the puppies receive deworming at around 7-8 weeks and their first vet checkup with vaccinations at the same time. The next set of shots is usually due around 11-12 weeks, which is about 2-3 weeks after your puppy comes home. Keeping your puppy on schedule for vaccinations is crucial; your vet can guide you during your first appointment.

Can I Take My Puppy to Public Places When I First Get Them?

While it's important for puppies to socialize between 8-16 weeks, protecting them from infectious diseases is crucial until they are fully immunized, usually by 16-18 weeks. You can introduce them to safe environments like trusted family and friends' homes, but avoid high-risk places until they're fully vaccinated. Always carry your puppy when out and about, including at the veterinarian's office, and avoid letting them on the floor. Use caution at dog stores and pet stores as these areas may not be clean and could harbor germs.

How Often Does She Need to Be Groomed?

Grooming should be done every 6-8 weeks, depending on how long you prefer to keep her coat.

Does Crate Training Help with Potty Training?

Yes, crate training accelerates the potty training process. Start by putting the dog in the crate for short periods during the day and at night.

Do Puppies Usually Get Up in the Middle of the Night to Pee?

Removing food and water at 8:00 each night and taking her out just before bedtime can help her hold it longer throughout the night. If she wakes up in the middle of the night, take her out, but don't wake her up to go potty.

How Many Hours at a Stretch Do Puppies Sleep at Night?

Puppies typically sleep in 5-6 hour stretches at night but may wake up more frequently when adjusting to a new environment.
